Too fast, too furious for the streets
CAPE TOWN – A CCID Public Safety Officer was injured in the CBD AREA in the early hours of Friday morning in an accident during which the driver of a luxury vehicle lost control of his car while trying to avoid a collision in Bree St.
The incident happened at about 02:15. The officer was deployed in Bree St and was standing on the centre island on the corner of Bree & Wale Sts when he was struck by the speeding vehicle.
Jurie Bruwer, manager of the CCID’s Safety & Security department, confirms that the security officer sustained head, neck and leg injuries.
“The driver struck the PSO when his vehicle mounted the pavement of the centre island. He was fast approaching the traffic intersection and, to avoid colliding with another vehicle, he lost control of his vehicle, mounted the pavement, struck a metal traffic sign pole and injured the officer. He also knocked down a robot. The vehicle came to a standstill on the sidewalk, facing oncoming traffic.”
CCID night manager Gary Dyssel, who was on duty at the time, arrived to find the PSO needing medical attention. “With the help of our mobile team members, we administer First Aid while waiting for paramedics to arrive. SAPS, the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services, Metro Police and City Law Enforcement all responded in record time. The PSO was taken by ambulance to N1 City Hospital.”
The driver was arrested by SAPS at the scene and charged with reckless and negligent driving at Cape Town Central Police Station.
