Suspects who partially decapitated lecturer sentenced

DURBAN – The Durban High Court in Kwazulu Natal has handed down life sentences for two suspects convicted for the Kidnapping & brutal Murder of MUT Lecturer, Chanlall (Shan) Dwarika on Sunday – May 23rd, 2023.

Accused one was convicted of Kidnapping & Robbery with Aggravating Circumstances & sentenced to five years for Kidnapping & 15 years for Robbery. Accused two & three were convicted of Kidnapping, Robbery with Aggravating Circumstances & Murder and were sentenced to five years for the Kidnapping, 15 years for Robbery & Life Imprisonment for Murder.

Dwarika’s partially decapitated body was recovered in a cane fields in Inanda after the arrest of one of the suspects by Police Officers from Greenwood Park SAPS & Officers from Reaction Unit South Africa.

Captain R. Naidoo from the Ethekweni District Task Team was tasked to investigate & detectives arrested two more suspects who pointed out the location of Dwarikas body on Saturday June 3rd, 2023.

The suspects who lived on Dwarika’s property in Sea Cow Lake kidnapped him with intention of drawing monies from his account. During the kidnapping, the Electrical Engineering Lecturer was handed his phone by the suspects and instructed him to call his wife at their home in Ethekweni (location withheld) to have the bank cards sent to the vehicle when they arrived at the gate.

Dwarika made an attempt to contact Reaction Unit South Africa for assistance instead of his wife. The suspects removed the phone from his possession and realised that he was trying to call for help. This angered them & they drove him to a canefield and slit his throat, partially decapitated him in the process.
