Bail for man who robbed granny on first date

ETHEKWENI – A 54 year old Chatsworth resident who robbed a 66 year old granny on their first date has been granted bail after spending 16 days in custody. Salim Ismail was granted bail of R1000 by the Verulam Magistrate Court. Ismail was tracked down to his home in Montford & arrested by Members of RUSA.

The suspect was wanted after he fled with cash, a mobile phone, SASSA cards & a bag belonging to a woman he had met on dating site Badoo. He immediately deleted his profile after robbing the woman & spent the cash gambling at Sibaya Casino.

Upon his arrest, Ismail informed Reaction Officers that he fetched the 66 year old pensioner from Isipingo on February 5, 2025 & transported her to Galleria Mall where she drew money from two SASSA cards. They then drove to a park in Pinetown with intention of finding a isolated spot. They were repeatedly disturbed by drug users and decided to drive approx 60 kilometers to Hazelmere Dam.

Ismail added that he had engaged in sexual activity with the woman & after three hours had driven her to a Service Station to freshen up. He decided to flee with her belongings when she became demanding and requested finance for her sexual favours. Ismail said he was angered when the woman had mocked him when she had found several packets of sex enhancement tablets in his vehicle.

Salim Ismail had previously been arrested for Rape & Theft and was remanded in Westville Prison in 2020 after robbing women he had met on dating sites Badoo & Tinder. Ismail’s next appearance in on March 26, 2025 in the Verulam Magistrates Court.
