Huge amount of illegal ammunition and rifle recovered

DURBAN – Yesterday, the Ethekwini District Economic Infrastructure Task Team (EITT) members executed a search warrant on information of firearms and ammunition being stored at an outbuilding in Sydenham area.

The SAPS members proceeded to the said location however the suspect managed to evade the police. The premises was searched and a AR 556 rifle was found lying on a table with 39 rifle rounds, five rifle magazines, 19 pistol rounds, one pistol magazine and the safe keys. Members immediately seized the rifle and ammunition.

During the continued investigation, it was established that more ammunition was being stored at a property in the Zinkwazi area, Kwadakhuza policing area.

EITT members immediately proceeded to the said location and upon arrival recovered more ammunition. Two thousand and five hundred and sixty two (2562) R5 rounds, 178 AK 47 rounds, 20 SG rounds, 45 28G rounds, 42 Buck Shot, one R5 plastic magazine and two black boxes. A 35-year-old male was arrested and detained.

The Ethekwini District Commissioner, Major General Makhosazana Victoria Kheswa, commended the EITT on the excellent arrest and huge recovery of illegal ammunition and rifle.
