Actual ‘Buffalo Soldiers’ Patrol The Streets Of Brazilian Island
On Marajó Island in Brazil, the military police patrol the streets on water buffaloes, a practice that has been in place for over 20 years.
This unique method of patrolling is used due to the island’s geography and the prevalence of water buffaloes, which are well-suited for navigating the muddy and flooded terrains. The island, located at the mouth of the Amazon River, has a large buffalo population, with approximately 600,000 buffaloes, more than the human population.
The buffaloes are also used for transportation, farm work, and providing milk, meat, and hides, making them an integral part of the local culture and economy.
