Monkey euthanised after being shot in head

TONGAAT – An infant Vervet monkey that was shot with a pellet gun was sadly euthanised. RUSA Operations Centre received a call for assistance from a resident of Shad Lane in La Mercy yesterday afternoon after they discovered the monkey with a penetrating wound above its left eye.

Officers transported and housed the injured animal at RUSA HQ.
Lindy Elmes, a volunteer from Monkey Helpline uplifted the monkey and transported it to a veterinarian. Elmes later informed the officer that an x-ray confirmed that a pellet had penetrated the monkey’s brain and it had to be euthanised.

The identity of the individual responsible for the shooting could not be established.
