Third Earth Tremor this Year hits parts of Joburg, Roodepoort and Soweto

GAUTENG – The Council of Geoscience (CGS) has confirmed an earth tremor hit parts of Johannesburg and the West Rand on Tuesday evening.

The first tremor occurred at 19:35:26 Local time yesterday at a depth of 2.7km with a magnitude of about 1.9 on the Richter scale, this event was classified as a rockburst (Tremor caused by rock fracturing under pressure).

The second event occurred at 03:56:34 Local time this morning at a depth of 1.3km with a magnitude of about 2.0, this aftershock was also a rockburst about 2.5km away from the main event. The data was recorded at the HRAO station at Hartebeeshoek Observatory some 35km from both events.
