Suspects arrested for possession goods in Amalgam
GAUTENG – A joint operation conducted by the JMPD Tactical Response Unit (TRU) and the South African Police Service Johannesburg Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) led to the arrest of two male suspects in Amalgam, Johannesburg.
On Friday, 26 July 2024, the operational team acted on credible information regarding the suspected transportation of stolen and unregistered cellphones from the China Mall in Johannesburg to an unknown destination. The operation targeted a suspect identified as potentially involved in this illicit activity.
Upon observation, the suspect was seen carrying a bag and attempted to evade arrest when authorities approached him. He subsequently exited a perfume shop at China Mall. Although a search of the shop did not yield the bag, further investigation revealed a concealed entrance that led to the ceiling area.
In this hidden space, officers discovered a compartment containing a significant quantity of cellphones from various brands and models, valued at approximately R5.5 million. In addition, a second secret compartment was located, which contained cash amounting to R549,750, concealed within the ceiling.
As a result of the operation, two suspects, aged 44 and 55, both Pakistani nationals, have been arrested. They are currently facing charges for contravening the ICASA Act and Labelling Regulations.
A case docket has been opened at the Langlaagte SAPS and the suspects are expected to appear in court soon. We encourage the public to continue reporting any suspicious activities to assist us in our ongoing mission to maintain law and order in the City of Johannesburg.
