The man who survived 62 hours trapped on the ocean floor
Harrison Okene is a Nigerian cook who survived for 60 hours in an air pocket of a sunken tugboat in the Atlantic Ocean. On May 26, 2013, the tugboat, named Jascon-4, capsized and sank off the coast of Nigeria due to heavy ocean currents. Harrison Okene, who was the only survivor of the 12 crew members on board, was in the bathroom when the boat sank.
After the accident, Okene found himself trapped in a small air pocket that was less than 4 feet high and 4 feet wide. He was able to find a small quantity of Coca-Cola to drink and a few packets of cookies to eat. He also used a flashlight to attract the attention of divers who were searching for the bodies of the deceased crew members.
His 62-hour ordeal, trapped in his underwear in a bathroom 100 feet below the ocean’s surface, is believed to be the longest any human being has ever survived after being trapped underwater. If Harrison was under another 4 hours he would’ve died.
Okene’s story gained international attention and he was praised for his incredible resilience and will to survive. He has since shared his story in numerous interviews and has become a source of inspiration for many.
