The ‘seasonal’ green lake of Austria

There is a magical place in Austria called Green Lake, or more exactly “Grüner See”. The Green Lake is a perfect example of how nature can surprise us with amazing phenomena. It is a natural beauty with an ecosystem that is repeated every year with the passing of the seasons, which makes the Green Lake one of the most interesting places in the world.

During the winter the waters of this lake basin are only a couple of meters deep and the surrounding area is used as a park, a perfect place to relax or have a walk in the woods.

When Spring arrives and temperatures start to rise, glaciers from the surrounding area begin to melt and the water then penetrates into the ground that flows into the basin below, thus creating the Green Lake, a real “seasonal” lake. During these months, the lake can reach a maximum depth of 12 meters. The lake reaches its peak in June, and it is truly a wonderful sight to behold.

Visitors can dive and swim among the trees, benches, paths and bridges, caressing the green grass of the lawn below you and the underwater blossomed flowers. The light which enters the water creates a stunning atmosphere with over 30 meters of visibility in the transparent waters.

Towards the end of July, the waters begin to diminish and the lake returns to being a normal mountain basin, still beautiful and attractive but with a secret of the amazing underwater world to come.
