Lethlabile Crime Intelligence operations leads to arrest & seizure
BRITS – Two intelligence driven operations conducted at Letlhabile and Taung resulted in the arrest of two suspects, aged 37 and 44. In Letlhabile near Brits, a multi-disciplinary team consisting of the Brits Crime Intelligence, Letlhabile Police as well as Hartbeesportdam Crime Prevention and K9 Unit, arrested a 37-year-old man at a shopping complex in Zone 15, on Friday, 5 July 2024. The arrest was effected after the team received and operationalised intelligence about a man who was trying to sell illegal firearms.
During the arrest, the suspect was found in possession of two 9mm pistols with obliterated serial numbers and loaded with 24 rounds of ammunition. Further investigation at the suspect’s residence, resulted in the discovery of two more firearms and a small box containing 13 ammunition. Additionally, the police found a courier company bag containing various cell phone recharge vouchers and a laptop.
In Taung, a multi-disciplinary team made up of Vryburg Public Order Police (POP), and K9 Unit as well as Taung and Schweizer-Reneke Crime Prevention Unit, arrested a 44-year-old man during the operation conducted at New Stands, Maphoitsile village. That after the suspect was found in possession of 9 mm pistol with a magazine and 11 ammunition on Friday, 5 July 2024. The suspect was arrested after failing to account for the possession.
Both suspects are expected to appear before the Brits and Taung Magistrates’ Courts respectively on Monday, 08 July 2024, on charges of unlawful possession of firearms and unlawful possession of ammunition. The suspect arrested in Letlhabile will also face a charge of possession of suspected stolen goods.
The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, lauded Bojanala Sub-District 1 and Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati teams for their dedication, which led to the arrests and confiscation of firearms that are used to commit serious and violent crimes. He also thanked members of the community for working together with the police in fighting crime.
