Second accused (92) in old age home murder case dies

BRITS – The second accused in the old age home murder case has died. Daniel Madumo (92) was charged, together with the late Jeremiah Mmatli, for the murder of Godfrey Motsepe in May. The latest update comes a day after the Correctional Services Department confirmed that Mmatli died last Thursday.

According to the department, Madumo, who was being held at the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre along with Mmatli, had to be transferred to an outside hospital on 22 June due to health complications. He passed away two days later. Mmatli died two days before Madumo was admitted.

At the time of their arrest, the police’s Amanda Funani said the victim had bumped into one of the accused in the early hours of the morning on Thursday, 30 May, when a fight broke out. “The victim allegedly bumped one of the suspects, who hit the former with his crutches. The suspect’s companion joined his friend, and they both assaulted the victim.”

The spokesperson for the Correctional Services Department, Singabakho Nxumalo, confirmed Mmatli died on Thursday last week. The pair were due to appear in the Brits Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday after failing to arrive at the court on at least two occasions since their arrest. It’s now up to the court to decide what should happen next in the case.
