Five killed in horrific highway collision
VERULAM – Five people were killed after the vehicle they were travelling in, was crushed by a truck on the M25 in the vicinity of KwaMashu on Saturday afternoon.
RUSA Phoenix Operations Centre received multiple calls from passing motorists reporting the incident. Reaction Officers were immediately dispatched and arrived on scene at approximately 13:36. Firefighters were in attendance and in the process of recovering the bodies of four people trapped in the wreckage of a Toyota. A fifth individual from the vehicle was lying under a Mercedes Benz Actros.
According to a witness, the light motor vehicle was travelling at a high rate of speed from KwaMashu in the direction of Avoca Hills. The driver allegedly failed to negotiate a bend and collided into a metal barrier. The car became airborne and landed in the contra flow lane. One occupant was ejected. The vehicle was crushed by a truck & trailer that was travelling in the opposite direction. The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries.
