BREAKING NEWS: Two dead, multiple missing in Eastern Cape floods

EAST LONDON – Two people have died at Kariega in Gqeberha, and multiple others remain missing amid heavy rain and flooding over the weekend. Craig Lambinon of the National Sea Rescue Institute said they’ve rescued at least 70 people and are still working to assist those affected.

“Multiple rescue operations remain underway. In one incident, at around 03h00, an SMHART security officer reported a vehicle with 6 persons trapped in the flooded Brak River, Rocklands. One male was recovered safely from an island that had formed in the river, an adult female was swept away and is missing, and the remaining four of these six people were recovered safely on the southern side of the river.”

“Multiple rescue operations have recovered persons safely from buildings, residences and vehicles. The fire station at Kariega has also been flooded,” said Lambinon.

Homes have been flooded and vehicles washed away in some parts. Emergency services say they’ve rescued multiple people and are still working to assist those affected. Roads in the area have been closed and motorists are advised to use alternative routes.
