JMPD Tactical Response Unit crackdown on illegal firearms

GAUTENG – The JMPD is proud to announce a significant breakthrough in its ongoing efforts to combat illegal firearms in our community.

On the evening of May 21, 2024, officers of the JMPD Tactical Response Unit (TRU) received information from Crime Intelligence about a suspected illegal firearms stash at a residence in Mayfair, Johannesburg. Acting on this information, officers proceeded to the said address.

Upon arrival, officers introduced themselves and requested permission to search the premises. The resident granted permission for the search. During the search, officers discovered a cache of firearms and ammunition in the suspect’s bedroom. The cache included eight 9mm firearms, 14 magazines, and 557 live rounds of ammunition.

The suspect, a Somalian national, alleged that individuals from Eldorado Park, Riverlea, and Westbury would borrow the firearms from him, paying him R1500 for each firearm. The suspect was subsequently arrested and detained at Brixton SAPS. A case docket has been opened for further investigation.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents. We will continue to work tirelessly to rid our streets of illegal firearms and other forms of crime.
