Suspects arrested for attempted murder

ROODEPOORT – On Monday, 01 April 2024, officers from the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Tactical Response Unit received a tip-off about a silver grey Hyundai i10, occupied by four males. These individuals were reportedly involved in car thefts and house break-ins in Turffontein.

In response, the officers patrolled Turffontein and its surrounding areas. At approximately 02:32, they received information that the vehicle in question was spotted in Roodepoort.

Upon reaching the specified location on Rothchild Road, the officers observed a male tampering with the gate of a shopping complex. Upon noticing the officers, the suspect fled the scene. The officers attempted to intercept the vehicle, but it sped away, leading to a chase.

As the chase ensued, the suspects opened fire on the officers, who returned fire. The chase continued until the driver of the suspects’ vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Rothchild and Progress Road in Lindhaven, resulting in a collision with another vehicle. Despite the crash, the driver and a passenger continued to fire at the officers.

The officers returned fire, and the passenger seated in the rear right fled the scene. The driver sustained gunshot wounds to his abdomen and leg, while the other two male suspects surrendered.
The three male suspects were apprehended, and a search of the vehicle revealed multiple tools used for car theft and house-breaking, along with a .38 special revolver.

The suspects were arrested and detained at Roodepoort SAPS on charges of attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and live ammunition, possession of car theft implements, and reckless and negligent driving.

The injured suspect received medical treatment and was transported to Leratong Hospital under police guard. The vehicle used in the crime was seized and impounded at the SAPS Lenasia pound.
