Major Baltimore bridge collapses after ship collision
BALTIMORE – A major bridge in the US city of Baltimore collapsed early Tuesday after being struck by a container ship, sending multiple vehicles and people plunging into the frigid harbor below.
A cargo ship collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday morning, according to Maryland Gov. Wes Moore.
Moore said that as many as 20 people and several vehicles had fallen into the Patapsco River, and a tractor-trailer was on the bridge when the cargo vessel hit a support pillar.
Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedfeld told reporters during a mid-morning news conference that eight people were on the bridge when it collapsed and two people are unaccounted for – one is in the hospital, one refused medical treatment and the others are being searched for. The six (6) presumed dead, are reported to be construction workers.
