Pregnant Lydenburg teacher mourned after horror accident

CENTURION – A collision on the N1 south on Tuesday afternoon, just past the Brakfontein interchange in Centurion claimed the life of 30-year-old Michelle Nel, a beloved Gr. 1 teacher from Lydenburg Primary School.

According to an articles published by news reporters, Nel with her mother, Barbara du Plooy, and her two-year-old daughter, Carli, were all together in the car when the accident happened on the N1 highway.

CERT, a non-profit and public beneficiary organisation, who was one of the first responders to the accident scene said when its medics arrived before 13:00, they found the vehicle was laying across two lanes of the highway.

It is reported that she was thrown from the vehicle. She and her unborn baby suffered serious injuries. Her mother and Carli suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

“Despite immediate medical attention, the pregnant woman succumbed to her injuries before she could be airlifted to a level 1 trauma facility,” CERT confirmed. The circumstances surrounding the accident are still not clear and investigations are ongoing.

Thank you to all emergency units for scene control and clean-up. In more tragic reports, Michelle was also due to give birth next month. Our prayers are with the families and relatives of the deceased.
