Earth ‘tremor’ hit parts of Gauteng

GAUTENG – The Council for Geoscience has confirmed a slight earth tremor in parts of Gauteng in the early hours of Tuesday morning. In a statement, the council said the tremor was located south of Johannesburg, approximately 3 km north of Harmony’s Doornkop Gold Mine.

“The earthquake registered a local magnitude of approximately 2.5 as recorded by the South African Seismograph Network,” the statement read. This is the first quake to hit the province in 2024.

In October, an earth tremor was felt across several parts of Johannesburg. While, in June 2023, many South Africans were also awoken by a powerful tremor which was felt across large parts of Gauteng.
