Residents warned against gifting refuse collectors
GAUTENG – The City of Tshwane has on Thursday warned residents to not to give Christmas gifts to refuse collectors during the festive season.
This after the city had noted with concern the disturbing allegations about some municipal refuse collectors and contractors who demand Christmas euphemism which implies money or gifts for the holidays from the ratepayers.
Tshwane spokesperson Selby Bokaba says that residents are under no obligation whatsoever to offer any gifts to refuse collection personnel.
“Residents are thus urged to report imposters, municipal refuse collectors as well as contractors who approach or harass them for gifts or donations as this goes against the city’s policies.
“The collection of waste from the doorstep of residents and businesses until the disposal thereof is the responsibility of the municipality. Customers cannot therefore be charged twice for the management of waste as this already forms part of their monthly utility bill.”
Residents have been encouraged to take a picture of the implicated person soliciting a ‘bribe’, jot down the registration number of the vehicle used and report the incident to wastemanagement@tshwane.gov.za
