Xolani Khumalo murder case postponed to 22 February

GAUTENG – Khumalo made a brief appearance in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court, where he faces a charge of murder following the death of Robert Varrie in July this year. The murder case against television presenter Xolani Khumalo has been postponed to 22 February 2024. Sizok’thola – targeted suspected drug peddlers in vigilante-styled confrontations.

The state requested the postponement as it mulls adding more charges against Khumalo. The National Prosecuting Authority has also resolved that the matter be trialled in the regional court. Khumalo’s lawyer, Advocate Prince Mafu, said his client remains curious about the state’s plan, and the strength of their case against him.

“At the moment, we are not in the position to determine that because we have not yet had disclosure of the docket. So, we don’t know precisely what the state’s case is centred around and the kind of evidence that they have. All we can do now is wait in anticipation.”

The State also sought leave to conduct further investigations in respect of witnesses and an identity parade involving persons of interest in the case. Last month Dstv show Moja Love announced that it had cut ties with the presenter.

It’s alleged Khumalo and his crew confronted Varrie at his Katlehong home after receiving tip-offs that he was involved in underhanded dealings. During the alleged encounter, Varrie was reportedly tortured and later died.

The TV presenter handed himself over to police in September and was released on R20,000 bail.
