Illicit contraband goods destroyed by SAPS
GAUTENG – On Saturday, The Minister of Police, General Bheki Cele and SAPS National Commissioner General Fannie Masemola join the Provincial Commissioner of Police in Gauteng Lieutenant General Elias Mawela at the destruction of counterfeit goods in Gauteng Industrial Estate, Clayville.
The counterfeit goods include famous designer brands and items such as clothes, shoes and accessories among others. The items are worth an estimated three billion rands in street value. Counterfeit goods, illicit goods and contraband work against the economy and are an ‘economic cancer’ as they feed away from the revenue.
These goods were seized in joint operations by SAPS and SARS, together with stakeholders that include brand protectors and other law enforcement agencies across the province during this financial year. The counterfeit goods are being destructed to avoid them re-entering the market.
