Hijacking robbery suspect arrested
VERULAM – Two men suspected of an armed robbery and hijacking were apprehended by members of Reaction Unit South Africa on Saturday.
Earlier this month (October), three suspects in a champagne VW Polo accosted a Verulam resident at the Tongaat Toll. The robbers drove off with him in his vehicle, followed by the VW Polo. They proceeded to Ballito where they robbed him of cash and his valuables. They abandoned his vehicle and sped off in their getaway car. On Saturday afternoon, the victim spotted two of the suspects in the Verulam CBD. They were driving the same vehicle used in the hijacking and robbery.
The complainant thereafter contacted RUSA for assistance. Reaction Officers were immediately mobilised. The man provided a description of the vehicle and the registration. Officers launched a search and spotted the vehicle opposite the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on Groom Street.
Two men were seen in the car consuming alcohol. Reaction Officers tactically approached and apprehended the occupants. The complainant positively identified the two men as the suspects who robbed him.
They were placed under arrest without incident and detained at SAPS Verulam.
