Unknown gunmen open fire on parolee
VERULAM – A 35-year-old male was shot twice by several armed suspects in the Verulam CBD yesterday afternoon. The Reaction Units were despatched to investigate after receiving reports of gunshots on the R102 Northbound lane in the vicinity of the Verulam Bus Rank. A responding Reaction Officer observed a man fleeing toward Russom Street with two armed suspects in pursuit. The suspects then fled in a white unidentified light motor vehicle upon noticing the approaching marked response vehicle. When interviewed, the man informed Reaction Officers that he was released from Westville Prison in Kwazulu Natal after serving eight years for Armed Robbery. He had no knowledge regarding the identities of the gunmen or why they intended to kill him. He added that he was attacked unprovoked and approx ten (10) live rounds were fired in his direction. He managed to flee on foot towards the RUSA Headquarters & met a Responding Officer who intervened. Paramedics were summoned to the scene and stabilised the victim before transferring him to a medical facility (name withheld). A case of Attempted Murder is being investigated.
