Police commited to deliver outstanding search and rescue services

NAMAKWA – The South African Police Service (SAPS) Search and Rescue Unit in the Northern Cape has been inundated with calls of assistance following the severe heavy rainfall that flooded the Namakwa district as of 28 June 2023. The police Search and Rescue Unit that is responsible for rescuing people trapped in dangerous and risky situations has been in the Namakwa, Namakhoi district municipality area from day one of the disaster, rescuing people and redirecting traffic to safe accessible areas.
The team, mindful of the risks involved of physical injuries, exposure to drowning and psychological trauma, performed a sterling job under the circumstances including discovering the bodies of four of the five reported missing persons that were searched bringing closure to their families. Many communities found themselves trapped and could not access other neighbouring towns for one or other services due to the flooding.
The SAPS Air Wing assisted search and rescue teams on the ground in terms of distributing the necessary aid including those that needed emergency medical assistance. The Police District Commander for the Namakwa District, Brigadier Schalk Andrews said that the police had to immediately step in as it is part of the police mission to create a safe and secure environment for all. He applauded the Police Search and Rescue team led by Captain Seeley for the professional and outstanding execution of the operation.
