Officer loses R3.7 million pension payout to ‘boyfriend’

LIMPOPO – A foreign national boyfriend from Uganda allegedly told the woman to leave her police constable job so they could go into business together. The victim indeed resigned in November last year. When she received her pension payout of R3.7 million in February 2023, she allegedly handed it to the suspect so that he could use the money to pay for a successful business venture.
The suspect then allegedly sent the victim on holiday for a few days. When she returned to the suspect’s apartment to see the progress with the new business venture, she found out that he had already vacated the apartment.
The victim tried to reach the suspect on the his phone, but the number was unreachable. She realised that she had been scammed and reported the matter to the police. After conducting a thorough investigation, the suspect was successfully traced and arrested at Burgersfort Police Station, where he was already detained for allegedly committing a similar offence.
