Group of volunteers help to bring back dignity to vandalized cemetery
GAUTENG – Friends of Johannesburg Cemeteries did a trial run of repairing one of the ash walls in the Braamfontein cemetery yesterday morning. They had a good turnout and most of the volunteers spent their morning recording details on plaques. Jonathan Felix brought two of his employees and with some team work, the first wall had its plaques replaced on the walls.
First step was to make sure the plaques were in the correct order, then the wall had to have all the old cement cleaned off. The plaques were fixed into place and given a good polish. This one wall took almost 3 hours to repair, so this will be a long process. Now we know what it entails, we will be following up with City Parks who have offered their labour as well as paying for the materials required. Thank you to all the volunteers who came out on a chilly morning to give of their time.
