Five killed in N3 pile-up near Hilton. involving 20 vehicles

KZN – The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport warned motorists to be extra cautious when driving on the N3 in Pietermaritzburg as the road was temporarily closed due to a multiple vehicle crash and pile up. This has forced the authorities to close the southbound between Hilton and Cedara, Johannesburg bound. N3 North (Durban bound) was also forced to close due to recoveries and provision of access by emergency services to the accident scene.
There was thick mist and slight rainfall which was demanding of motorists to adjust their driving patterns in the area. The preliminary investigations suggest that at least five people have lost their lives and scores sustained injuries during this horrific crash. This accident involves five trucks, eight minibus taxis and twenty-two light motor vehicles.
The department was cautioning motorists to use alternative routes such as R103 or delay their travel arrangements until the road is cleared. Motorists are also cautioned of inclement weather that was expected overnight. The investigation to the cause of the accident is continuing as various agencies was on the scene.
