BREAKING NEWS: Madibeng consumer compliance inspection underway in Brits & Hebron

BRITS – The Business Compliance Enforcement Inspection Operation led by DEDECT continued in Madibeng Local Municipality within the Bojanala District this week with various regulators from local, provincial and national government. The teams visited various businesses including, retailers, wholesalers, liquor outlets, and automotive dealers in the Brits CBD and Hebron to inspect compliance with legislative requirements.
The compliance enforcement operation found a number of businesses selling counterfeit cigarettes and goods within the Brits CBD , which were confiscated and hefty fines were issued. Foodstuff and other goods such as tooth brushes, roll-ons, and shoe polish were among those not properly packaged and labelled (no important details such as suppliers’ name, contacts, manufacturing and expiry date). These products were condemned and the necessary investigations into their origins will follow. The Department advises consumers to be aware of such products and their labelling in order to guard against counterfeit goods which may be harmful to consumers’ health.
Other items that were not compliant in terms of the Consumer, Liquor and National Health Acts, and other applicable legislation included vehicle spares, personal protective equipment, harmful plastics and electronic products, were removed from the shelves, and noncompliance notices were also issued for these. The North West Gambling Board also participated in the operation and found two informal and unlicensed gambling operations in Brits and issued them with a fine of R2500 each.
The team of inspectors comprised of DEDECT Consumer Protection Office, Department of Home Affairs, Department of Employment and Labour, Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Motor Industry Ombudsman of South Africa (MIOSA), National Consumer Commission (NCC), National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS), ICASA, Bojanala District Municipality Environmental Health Services, Departmental entirties and South African Police Service.
