South Africa warned about major fuel shortages
GAUTENG – It’s been 17 years since South Africa experienced a significant fuel shortage. A Commission of Inquiry was held and recommended actions were put forward. However, very few steps have been taken in this regard and history may be on the brink of repeating itself once again. The Liquefied Fuels Wholesalers Association (LWFA) has sounded alarm over looming fuel shortages in the country. The association says that South Africa’s strategic fuel reserves have run dry, and that could create a problem of pumps running dry as well, due to South Africa having moved from being a refining country to an importing country.
An alert has been issued by the Shadow Energy Minister, after he was made aware of just how low South Africa’s refined fuel stocks are currently running. Industry chiefs are now deeply concerned about a possible shortage of fuel in the Country. The recent Transnet strike has been devastating for South African transport networks. In September, Cape Town International Airport narrowly avoided running out of the fuel it had in reserve. With Eskom also burning through diesel like there’s no tomorrow, a very serious crisis is now emerging.
